Councils must stop using terrorist legislation to snoop

12.00.00am GMT Wed 19th Nov 2008

Responding to Vernon Coaker's comments that the Government is planning to stop local councils from using terrorism legislation to snoop on people, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"It is about time someone in the Government admitted that the surveillance society has gone too far.

"For too long councils have been allowed to use powers designed for terrorism and organised crime to spy on people's kids, pets and bins.

"This must be corrected now, not in the near future."
